Another textile manufacturer may leave for China – 100 jobs at stake
Christchurch Textile manufacturer Gale Pacific (NZ) limited is contemplating closing and moving China, says the National Distribution Union.
The NDU represents 60 workers at Gale Pacific with the Engineering, Printing and Manufacturing Union representing another 20 workers at the site.
National Distribution Union Southern Region Secretary Paul Watson says that it is clear that the lure and attraction of China’s poverty wage economy offers greater interest to investors than a commitment to the New Zealand workforce, their families and the local manufacturing industry.
“If Gale Pacific closes and moves offshore it would be a severe blow to the local community and especially to their skilled workers and their families who will be cast adrift,” he said. “The average age of members is around fifty and many may find it hard to find permanent alternative employment.”
Mr Watson said that it is another body blow for the manufacturing sector and the local economy and that the situation requires urgent Government attention, intervention and investigation into the root causes of the problem.
“The current situation is a sad indictment of the state of New Zealand manufacturing and the Government needs to wake up and take stock of the fact that we have a major problem on our hands. We need urgent action starting with an meeting of industry stakeholders including unions and affected communities to openly find solutions to this very worrying situation.”
Mr Watson says that the NDU is in talks with Gale Pacific’s and Government agencies about what can be done to keep the company in New Zealand.
“The important social and economic value of New Zealand manufacturing to the New Zealand workforce and their families, unions and local communities is worth fighting for,” he said.
